What if I am a beginner? Where should I start?

If you have never danced Salsa before, then we welcome you. We hope that you love it as much as we do. Starting a new hobby like dancing is exciting and we want to help make your experience a pleasant one. Our beginner classes are arranged in 4-week cycles that begin at the start of every month. View our calendar to find out when the next cycle begins. We highly recommend all new beginners start during the first week of the cycle so that they don't feel behind and get frustrated. We offer four beginner classes each week, so you can be flexible in choosing which day(s) you want to attend. It is best to begin your cycle at a time when you are able to be consistent in attending class each week, because just missing one week will put you behind the rest of the class.

What if I have danced Salsa before, but not the On2 style?

There are many different styles of Salsa that are danced. In NYC, the two most common styles you will encounter are the On1 & On2 styles. While similar, there are still many distinctions in the timing and footwork of the two styles. So even if you have danced Salsa before, chances are that you will still need to start in the Beginner Level I class to familiarize yourself with the On2 style of Salsa.

I have completed the Beginner Level I cycle...now what?

Congrats! You should be proud of yourself. You now know the basics and are hopefully ready to take the next step and advance into the Beginner Level II class. This is also a 4-week cycle that requires consistent weekly attendance in order to not fall behind. It is best to begin during the first week of the cycle in order to not fall behind the rest of the class and feel frustrated. View our calendar to find out when the next cycle begins.

What should I wear to class?

Wear casual clothing that is comfortable for you to move in. No flip flops or sneakers in Salsa class. Flat shoes, low heels and men's dress shoes are all fine. It is highly recommended that you use the right tools for the job and purchase a pair of dance shoes if you haven't already. Step Into Salsa offers $20 discount to all students who purchase dance shoes through LatinDanceShoesOnline. Click here to learn how you can save $20 on your next pair of dance shoes.

How many times per week can I attend class?

You can attend as many classes during the week as you desire as long as you have passed off that particular level of class with an instructor. For instance, a student who just completed and passed the Beginner Level I class can attend any Beginner Level I or Level II classes. However, he will not be able to attend Level III classes until he has passed off Level II with an instructor.

We encourage students to attend a minimum of two classes per week if they wish to improve. We also encourage students to continue to strengthen their understanding of the basics even after they have advanced into higher level classes. Repetition and practice is key. We also encourage students to get together outside of class and practice as well as organize monthly dance outings for students to practice their moves.

Should I progress to the next level if I feel uncomfortable in my current level?

No. If you feel like you need more work on your basics, then please take a few extra classes in the basic level before advancing into the next level. Investing more time in learning your basics and fundamentals will help you tremendously once you advance into the higher levels. For outside-of-class review, we also offer our entire beginner level syllabus online in video format which you can learn more about here.

What if I think I am ready for the next level, but the instructor does not?

There may be times when we ask a student to take another basic level class before they advance into the next level, even if they have already completed the basic level. We do not do this to hurt your feelings or to get you to take more classes. We want to make sure you a ready for the next level and will not slow down the group. If you absolutely think you are ready for the next level and the instructor disagrees, then we may offer you a small quiz on the basic level moves. If you complete it to our satisfaction, then you will be allowed to advance into the next level. If not, then we will give you specific feedback on what you need to work on in order to advance.

Can I share my package with my significant other or a friend?

Unfortunately, we do not allow packages to be shared.

Does my package have an expiration date?

Yes. All class packages have an expiration date which varies depending on the specific package you purchased. You can view the expiration time limits under our class prices.

What if my punch card has expired and I still have classes left? Do I just lose them?

If your punch card has expired and you still have unused classes, then you are allowed to extend your expiration date 30 days for a fee of $10. The 30-day extension will begin from the original expiration date. If your card expired 3 months ago, for example, then unfortunately you would not be able to redeem your unused classes for the $10 fee. This $10 extension does not apply to unlimited monthly class packages.
